Morry Schwartz, publisher of The Saturday Paper, Quarterly Essay and The Monthly, has stepped back from his role as chairman of Schwartz Media

In an internal statement to staff shared by product chief Zoe Featherstone, Mr Schwartz said he would step down to “give space to the next phase of growth and excellence”.

“Today I have made the decision to step aside as chairman of Schwartz Media and step back from day-to-day operations,” he wrote.

“I am extremely proud of the company I have built and of the titles that make Schwartz Media the country’s leading independent news source,” he wrote. “I have full confidence in the senior team at Schwartz Media, who will lead the company from here. I am stepping back to give space to the next phase of growth and excellence.

“A new chief executive will join the company in the new year.”

Schwartz Media has faced internal acrimony over how its publications cover the conflict in Gaza. Mr Schwartz’s parents were survivors of the Holocaust. More than 10 Schwartz staff signed an open letter to the Australian media calling for more sympathetic coverage for Palestinian groups and greater scepticism of Israeli authorities.

Mr Schwartz took over as Schwartz Media chief executive, alongside his position as chairman, earlier this year after the company’s longstanding boss, Rebecca Costello, took a job at Guardian Australia.
